9/02/2025 – Did you know that every year, nearly 10 billion animals are raised and killed in the U.S. by just a few giant factory farming corporations—an industry that is both cruel and wantonly destructive to the environment? The animal agriculture industry alone contributes 37% of all U.S. methane emissions, contributing significantly to the global climate crisis.
In April, our friends at the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) took on agribusiness giant Foster Poultry Farms over alleged excessive water use in the slaughter and processing of chickens at its Livingston, CA plant—the largest chicken-processing facility on the West Coast. Foster Poultry Farms employed a pool of electrified water to paralyze the chickens, a method that still left them conscious and capable of feeling pain. Because the birds were paralyzed and not fully unconscious, vomit and feces often needed to be washed off afterward, further increasing water use. After reaching a settlement, Foster Poultry Farms has agreed to improve water conservation and animal welfare. The new requirements will boost water conservation in a severely over-drafted basin and improve conditions for the millions of chickens slaughtered there each year.
