The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is the leading science-based nonprofit working for a safer world. UCS combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical solutions and to secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices. Since its founding in 1969, UCS has been deeply committed to reducing the risks posed by nuclear weapons and promoting global security. In their work to rein in missile defense, UCS has long been a leading voice countering the prevailing misconception that missile defense systems would actually work in real-world attacks and pointing out the negative consequences of such systems.
Support from the Cultures of Resistance Network enabled UCS to observe, analyze, and critique various missile systems. This work included carrying out a technical analysis of Iran’s Satellite Launch Program; collaborating on a major study on the potential negative effects of a NATO missile system; providing public assessments of North Korea’s missile program; maintaining a presence at important non-proliferation meetings hosted by the U.S. government; and providing information to policy makers who oppose the creation of a space-based missile defense programs.
