The Marathon of Afghanistan is the first-ever International Marathon in Afghanistan. The event provides a chance for international and local runners of all ethnicities, genders, and socio-economic backgrounds to compete in the main event or the associated 10km race.
A 2020 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported expenses for the 2020 marathon, which had a local festival in place of inviting international runners due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 grants from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported travel and accommodation costs for the Marathon of Afghanistan, allowing runners from all the major cities of Afghanistan to compete and make the event a truly national race. In a country often divided on ethnic lines, this was a great symbol of national unity.
