She is the paramount chief of Malawi’s Dedza District and is determined to eradicate child marriage. She’s featured in “Dispatches from Malawi,” a short film series from Cultures of Resistance Films.
So far, Kachindamoto has terminated about 4,000 child marriages in Malawi. The country has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world, with 1 in every 2 girls married by age 18 (UN women).
Realizing that she couldn’t change the traditional mindset of parents, Kachindamoto instead changed the law, getting her 50 sub-chiefs to sign an agreement to abolish child marriage!
She is now working with Africycle to provide bikes to girls rescued from child marriages. The bikes will help the girls get to school and access education for years to come. We’re proud to support this initiative.
