12/12/22 — The female higher education enrollment rate in Afghanistan in recent years stood at only 1% of the age cohort, which is among the lowest of all countries, and now is further restrictions to the Taliban takeover. While girls have been allowed back into primary schools and universities with a number of restrictions, girls between sixth and twelfth grade are currently only permitted to attend religious schools. The gutting of secondary education systems for girls will have a long-lasting impact on women’s futures in the region!

We are proud to support the work of the Gawharshad Institute of Higher Education (GIHE) is an educational institution in Kabul, Afghanistan that in particular aims to create a space for female students. It was founded by Nobel Peace Prize-nominee Dr. Sima Samar and since its founding has enrolled hundreds of students in its Political Science, Law, and Economics & Management departments.
