6/17/22 — The global boycott of Russian gas has created energy crisis worldwide and many countries are using this issue to push nuclear energy as the non carbon-creating energy solution. But we at Cultures of Resistance, together with our international partners, promote Anti-Nuclear Campaigns.
In Korea for example, our grantee the Korea Federation for Environmental Movements (KFEM) is producing media content to inform the public about the threats from nuclear power, in particular the president’s new proposed plant in Seoul. KFEM will conduct public education and discussion sessions for citizens on various topics related to denuclearization, such as the reason why nuclear power plants are not an alternative to decarbonization and climate crisis, nuclear waste issues, safety issues, Fukushima pending issues, etc. These efforts will be complemented by policy engagement targeting the proposed new nuclear power plant (Shinhanul Units 3 and 4), insisting on the re-establishment of basic policy for high-level radioactive waste, demanding a response to Fukushima Radioactive Contaminated Water Issues and system improvement to strengthen nuclear power plant safety regulations, and the enactment of legislation prohibiting construction of new nuclear power plants and plant life extension.
