8/10/22 — A set of bills under consideration by Brazil’s government could greatly relax regulation of pesticides. The package of legislation, dubbed the “Poison Bill”, is being pushed through by large agribusiness ones, even though the use of pesticides harms people and their ways of life, and the risk is growing for people in the global south.
In Brazil, the number of agrochemicals released for domestic use has been increasing under President Jair Bolsonaro. In 2019, Bolsonaro approved the registration of 474 new pesticides — the highest number in 14 years! Moreover, agribusinesses are expanding their operations in the country including their intensive usage of pesticides despite their harmful effect on traditional ways of life!
Amigos de Terra Brasil is organizing against the usage of agrochemicals in southern Brazil! They are working to educate and create solidarity networks among local communities, promoting a more sustainable and safe path forward for agriculture. We stand with their campaign and hope you will too! More information at: http://www.amigosdaterrabrasil.org.br/
