The Women’s Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling (WCLAC) works to promote the social and legal rights of women in Palestine. At the same time, it advocates for the development of a democratic Palestinian state based on the principles of gender equality. Ultimately, WCLAC aims to ensure that promotion of women’s rights helps shape an independent Palestinian state.
WCLAC plays a prominent role, both publicly and privately, in addressing gender-based violence in Palestinian society. Active in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and numerous other Palestinian communities, WCLAC has in the past year provided counsel, shelter or legal aid to over a thousand Palestinian women. During the 2014 Israeli assault on Gaza, WCLAC field workers collected testimony from Gazan women and documented their experiences.
Grants in 2013 and 2014 from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported general operations and capacity-building at the Women’s Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling. Donor Direct Action served as fiscal sponsor for this grant.
