Prospect Burma

Following the brutal suppression in Burma of student-led demonstrations for democracy in 1988, Prospect Burma was founded in 1989 as a United Kingdom-based educational trust. The group’s founding principle was, and remains, the need to invest in the education of the next generation, those upon whom the country’s future and hopes for positive change depend. Prospect Burma’s main objective is to build a core group of skilled Burmese people who will specialize in studying subjects vital to the rebuilding of civil society in Burma. All students accept financial support on the condition that they commit to return home to put their new skills and knowledge to use.

A 2013 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network helped a student pursue a Master’s in Public Administration in the United States . Grants in 2011 and 2012 helped a student complete a Master’s in International Human Rights Law in the United Kingdom.

In addition to support from the Cultures of Resistance Network, director iara lee arranged an outside grant for Prospect Burma in 2022 to support seven students in their Access to Learning: Mizoram project.
