Physicians for Human Rights – Israel (PHR-Israel)

Physicians for Human Rights – Israel (PHR-Israel) is a human rights organization that advocates for the fulfillment of the right to health for all people in Israel and the Occupied Territories. Founded in 1988, PHR-Israel’s campaigns are informed by the principles of medical ethics, human rights, and social justice. The organization seeks to monitor, expose, and provide an alternative to the ways in which occupation, the structure of citizenship, privatization of the health system, and growing gaps in the accessibility of health services limit the right to health and hinder access to necessary medical services.

An emergency 2012 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network enabled PHR-Israel to offer medical support to at least five Palestinian prisoners waging protracted hunger strikes. Over the first half of 2012, thousands of Palestinian detainees incarcerated in Israeli prisons launched hunger strikes protesting deteriorating prison conditions and their prolonged detention without due process.
