Arms and Security Initiative of the New America Foundation

The New America Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute that invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States. New America regularly launches multi-year, issue-specific “Policy Programs” to bring innovative policy solutions to the fore of the national debate. These programs combine ongoing research and publications with working groups, conferences, and high-profile public events.

One of these programs is “U.S. Weapons at War: Promoting a Ban on Cluster Munitions.” From Lebanon to Iraq to Georgia, cluster munitions are routinely deployed and detonated in war despite an international effort to curb their production and ban their use. Their devastating impact on civilians extends long after ceasefires are announced and treaties are signed.

Support from the Cultures of Resistance Network contributed to Arms and Security Initiative’s advocacy for the Convention on Cluster Munitions – an international treaty to ban the weapons – since its inception in 2007, and focuses in particular on raising awareness of the issue in the U.S., which has used cluster bombs in Iraq.
