Khurpa Care Pakistan

Khurpa Care Pakistan (KCP) is a Pakistani-run, Skardu-based nongovernmental organization that focuses on the welfare of porters, tourism promotion, and tourism-related conflict resolution in the region of Gilgit-Baltistan. Since 2006, Khurpa Care Pakistan has been helping set Khurpa wages, organizing seminars and stakeholder meetings on pressing issues, and leading workshops about eco-tourism. KCP also trains people in basic climbing and rescue, first aid, health and hygiene, and environmental and glacier protection. Additionally, the organization works to implement clean-up campaigns and expeditions along major trekking routes. Through these activities, KCP representatives work with nearly 2,000 porters to make concrete improvements in the lives of these tough, proud men.

Grants from the Cultures of Resistance Network in 2015, 2016, and 2017 supported KCP’s training programs in porter skills development, safety measures, and youth skills development. It also supported winter training for porters. With CoR‘s assistance, KCP representatives are interacting with thousands of Pakistani porters and foreign visitors on the popular Baltoro glacier trekking route to increase the visibility of porter issues and help achieve changes that directly improve porters’ safety and working conditions. These KCP representatives help enforce government policies that ensure the dignity of porters and mediate disputes that arise involving porters’ rights and responsibilities.

A personal contribution from CoR director iara lee in 2023 further supported KCP’s training programs.
