Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU)

Established in 2005 by a group of concerned Americans, the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU) is an independent non-profit organization that provides journalists with quick access to information about Palestine and the Palestinians, as well as expert sources, both in the United States and in the Middle East. Both through its website and its staff, the IMEU works with journalists to increase the public’s understanding about the socio-economic, political and cultural aspects of Palestine, Palestinians and Palestinian Americans.

The IMEU is not affiliated with any government or political party. It is funded through individual donations and foundations. The IMEU believes that increased understanding of the peoples of the Middle East — their history, their struggles, their rights and aspirations — can help lead to a just and lasting peace, which is in the interest of all Americans and all peoples of the region.

A 2020 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the IMEU’s work playing a central role in amplifying Palestinian voices through mainstream media coverage and original digital content on Palestine—continuing to propel shifts in US public opinion and support for Palestinian rights.

A 2018 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the IMEU’s work in Gaza.

A 2010 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network allowed the IMEU to provide journalists with sources from and information about the May 2010 Freedom Flotilla to Gaza and the political, economic, and humanitarian realities of life for the 1.5 million Palestinians who live there.
