Human Rights Watch (HRW) is one of the world’s leading independent organizations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights. HRW’s rigorous, objective investigations and strategic advocacy build intense pressure for action and raise the cost of human rights abuse. A 2018 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported HRW’s work with the Rohingya. When the Myanmar military ethnically cleansed 700,000 Rohingya and denied their accounts of murder, rape, and arson, HRW corroborated their testimony with satellite imagery to show the burning of some 350 Rohingya villages. HRW rallied a powerful response, including targeted sanctions against Myanmar military commanders and the initiation of a new United Nations mechanism to collect evidence and build cases for prosecution.
