Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (via Grassroots International)

Founded in 1990 by the late Dr. Eyad el Sarraj, the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme aims to foster the mental well-being of the Palestinian community and help Palestinians heal from the trauma of war and occupation. Its mental health initiatives are based in principles of justice, humanity and respect for human rights.

The group’s primary goals are to provide humane and high quality community-based mental health services; to develop local human resources through mental health training programs; and to combat the stigma attached to mental illness in the Palestinian society. Aiming to empower vulnerable groups, GCMHP works primarily with women, children, and torture survivors.

More broadly, GCMHP seeks to promote principles of democracy and human rights in Palestinian society as well as to raise international awareness of the conditions that Palestinians face. The group ultimately aims to help build a Palestinian society in which people live in dignity, free of oppression.

A 2012 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the group’s general operations in Gaza. Grassroots International served as the fiscal sponsor for this grant.
