Freedom Theatre (via Middle East Children's Alliance)
Established in 2006, the mission of The Freedom Theatre is to develop a vibrant and creative artistic community in the northern section of the West Bank, with an emphasis on using the arts as a catalyst for social change. By providing a platform for artistic expression, The Freedom Theatre’s programs respond to the fundamental human need to share one’s story and have it heard, acknowledged, and honored. The Freedom Theatre’s main activities fall under two categories: Theatre and Multimedia. The Theatre Programme encompasses a 3-year professional acting school, the first in Palestine, and drama activities and performances. The Multimedia Programme provides training in photography, creative writing, and filmmaking.
A 2023 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the restoration of damage to the theater after recent military actions.
A 2022 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported The Freedom Theatre’s Performing Arts School, a professional, full-time, multiple-year program that focuses on acting, directing and teaching.
A 2020 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported The Freedom Theatre’s cine club and cinema workshops.
A 2018 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the theater’s child and youth activities, in particular its children’s production of “The Little Lantern,” based on the book by Ghassan Kanafani—a story about following your dreams, having courage, and breaking down barriers between the rich and poor.
A 2012 grant from Cultures of Resistance Network supported the Multimedia Programme in building its capacity, offering filmmaking workshops, and presenting a series of film screenings aimed at enhancing public awareness and debate on relevant local and international issues.
The Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA) served as a fiscal sponsor for this grant.
