Environmental Rights Action

Environmental Rights Action (ERA) is a Nigerian advocacy organization founded in 1993 to deal with environmental human rights issues in Nigeria. It is dedicated to the defense of human ecosystems and to the promotion of environmentally responsible governmental, commercial, community, and individual practice in Nigeria through the empowerment of local people. ERA is the Nigerian chapter of Friends of the Earth International and the coordinating NGO in Africa for Oilwatch International, a network of groups in the Global South concerned about the effects of oil on the environment of people who live in oil-bearing regions. ERA has also been the winner of the Sophie Prize.

A 2018 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported ERA’s trainings on women’s empowerment and energy transitions, from fossil fuels to renewables. The trainings focus on the problems of deforestation, climate change, and the latter’s economic and health implications. ERA conducts demonstrations on renewable energy alternatives, solar gadgets, and efficient cookstoves for the women in the trainings. They also help women create start-ups on renewable energy delivery in their communities.
