Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)

The Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1981. CPJ’s mission is to promote press freedom worldwide by defending the rights of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal. Since its beginning, CPJ has stood up for countless journalists, saving lives and exposing those who would silence the media. By publicly revealing abuses against the press and by acting on behalf of imprisoned and threatened journalists, CPJ effectively warns journalists and news organizations where attacks on press freedom are occurring. CPJ organizes vigorous public protests and works through diplomatic channels to effect change. CPJ publishes articles and news releases; special reports; a biannual online magazine, Dangerous Assignments; and Attacks on the Press, the most comprehensive annual survey of press freedom around the world. CPJ is the only organization in the U.S with a full-time staff devoted solely to monitoring and responding to attacks on press freedom across the globe.

A 2024 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported CPJ’s work to support journalists in Gaza.

A 2021 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported CPJ’s general operating expenses.

A 2018 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported CPJ’s work in the Middle East.

Grants from the Cultures of Resistance Network in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014 supported CPJ’s Middle East & North Africa (MENA) program and its work highlighting impunity cases in the region, particularly in Egypt. The program chooses cases which it believes would benefit most from intervention in the form of alerts on the anniversaries of the journalists’ deaths, as well as public letters and embassy or permanent mission visits demanding that transparent investigation be launched.

The program also highlights the plight of bloggers and other Internet-based reporters in the MENA region, who do not enjoy the relative institutional protections provided to print or television journalists and who have in recent years become targets of repressive tactics, especially in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.
