Child Soldiers International (via Human Rights Watch)

Child Soldiers International (formerly the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers) sought to pressure governments to fulfill their international legal obligations to end and prevent child soldiering, as laid out in the Optional Protocol on children in armed conflict. In order to achieve this long term goal, the Coalition undertook detailed country and thematic research to support international and national advocacy initiatives for the implementation of legal and policy measures to address child soldiering.

Due to funding challenges, Child Soldiers International stopped operating in 2019. The organization handed its programs in the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, as well as its Child Soldiers World Index, over to its Canada-based partner, the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative. The Child Rights International Network took on its campaign to raise the minimum recruitment age in the British armed forces.

A grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Child Soldiers International’s research and consultations to inform a full program development for Chad. Human Rights Watch served as a fiscal sponsor for this grant.
