Abolition 2000 (via Pax Christi USA)

Abolition 2000 is a network of over 2000 organizations in more than 90 countries worldwide working for a global treaty to eliminate nuclear weapons. In April 1995, the 25-year-old Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) was reviewed at the United Nations to evaluate whether it should be extended. Activists from around the world were dismayed that, in renewing the treaty, nations had left the issue of nuclear abolition off the agenda. Non-governmental organizations from dozens of countries worldwide responded by writing the founding document of Abolition 2000, setting out an eleven-point program for nuclear disarmament and calling for negotiations to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Abolition 2000 partners closely with Mayors for Peace, Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), and others working toward a nuclear weapons convention within a time-bound framework. A grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Abolition 2000’s efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons. Pax Christi USA is the secretariat and fiscal sponsor for Abolition 2000.
