East Timor and Indonesia Action Network (ETAN)

The East Timor and Indonesia Action Network (ETAN) was founded in November 1991 to support genuine self-determination and human rights for the people of East Timor, and change in U.S. foreign policy. ETAN organizes to hold perpetrators of crimes against humanity and war crimes accountable. The network also works to restrict security assistance to Indonesia, partially as a response to the U.S.-backed Indonesian government’s invasion of East Timor.

Despite the country’s healthy budget and substantial petroleum resources, East Timor’s government has announced plans to begin borrowing. ETAN has partnered with national and international groups to organize opposition to this plan. Specifically, the network aims to highlight the experiences of citizens in debt-burdened developing countries, where a significant portion of government revenues goes to servicing loans rather than investing in the people.
