Grassroots International

Grassroots International fosters innovative models of sustainable agriculture and social justice that protect small farmers, communities, and the environment. The organization pursues justice by supporting rural and indigenous people in their struggle for resource rights – namely, the right to land, water, and food, and the sustainable stewardship of these resources. Since 1983, Grassroots International has worked in the Americas, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and has joined Global South partners in advocating for policy and systemic change in the United States, the de facto driver of the global food system.

A 2021 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Grassroots International’s work in Haiti and Palestine.

A 2020 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Grassroots International’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund, focusing on pandemic response efforts in Palestine.

A 2016 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Grassroots International’s Climate Justice in Palestine program. The program brings a heightened focus to movements working at the intersection of social justice and climate justice on the global level. It aims to build a stronger climate justice movement and expedite the just transition toward sustainability. This is part of the organization’s Global Climate Justice Initiative, which identifies and brings together some of the most effective climate justice work in Africa, Mesoamerica, Brazil, the Middle East, and Haiti. Its goal is to build and grow the kind of solutions and movement-building that are needed to reverse the course of climate change and get us on a path to sustainability and resiliency.

A separate 2016 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network contributed to Grassroots International’s movement-building work in the Global South. This work included supporting indigenous communities, peasant farmers, and rural women as they bravely defended their rights to stay on their ancestral lands, safeguard their water, and control their own food production.

Support from the Cultures of Resistance Network has also contributed to Grassroots International’s work with community-based organizations in Palestine that aim to gain control of water, land, and food for the people living there.
