Global Media Campaign to End FGM

The Global Media Campaign to End FGM (female genital mutilation) aims to empower activists around the world by using different forms of media to amplify their voices. The campaign trains activists, religious leaders, and journalists to use the media to end FGM, helping them broadcast directly to their own communities, in their own language, using their own words. They also bring influential religious and political leaders on the radio, TV, and social media. The activists’ radio and TV programs are broadcast in seven countries (Mali, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, and Puntland) and have reached over 870 million viewers and listeners.

A 2021 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported seven campaigns in Sierra Leone that were organized by local media activists to run several radio and TV campaigns over Easter with anti-FGM messages in high-prevalence areas.
