Firefly International works to overcome boundaries between cultures through friendship, education, and the arts. The organization is guided by its belief in universal human rights and often collaborates with other organizations that carry the same goals and operate under similar principles. One of Firefly’s primary initiatives is the Reel Festivals series, which deals with specific conflict areas in an in-depth manner by using as many different arts and educational forms as possible. This project aims to spread awareness of areas in conflict beyond the headlines, to empower cultural figures and nurture their development, to encourage engagement with the arts and international issues, and to foster dialog between communities.
A 2012 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Firefly’s Reel Iraq festival in the UK. The festival is an opportunity to showcase Iraq’s music, film, and visual arts to audiences overseas in the effort of strengthening cross-cultural understanding.
