Council on American-Islamic Relations – New York

The Council on American-Islamic Relations – NY (CAIR-NY) has a mission to protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. Through legal representation, education, media relations, and advocacy, CAIR–NY empowers the American Muslim community and encourages its participation in political and social activism. CAIR–NY counsels, mediates, and advocates on behalf of Muslims and others who have experienced discrimination, harassment, or hate crimes. Its lawyers work to protect and defend the constitutional rights of American Muslims, thus supporting the rights of all Americans.

A 2017 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network helped fund CAIR-NY’s legal employment salaries. This helped maintain the organization’s capacity to have its hundreds of callers receive direct legal support rather than referring them to third parties. This allows victims, who are often traumatized, to get the expected assistance they need from an organization they trust—one that can ease language and cultural barriers that sometimes prevent them from seeking assistance elsewhere.
