Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma)

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma), was formed in 2000 to provide vital humanitarian assistance to current political prisoners and their families inside Burma, as well as former political prisoners both inside Burma and on the Thai-Burma border. Burmese political prisoners were subjected to severe torture, cruel, degrading and inhumane treatment for many years under the oppressive military dictatorship in Burma. Though a new reformist government has promised to release all political prisoners, many activists and dissidents remain behind bars or tied up in legal struggles. AAPPB documents and disseminates information on the current situation of political prisoners in Burma and provides other organizations with information to conduct their activities.

AAPP used this grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network to support twenty political prisoners. The US Campaign for Burma (USCB) served as a fiscal sponsor for this grant.
