Promo Jeune Basket (PJB)

Promo Jeune Basket (PJB) is an organization based in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, that uses basketball to inspire young people to take a serious approach to their education and civil responsibilities. Established in 2007, today over 500 boys and girls from all social demographics participate in PJB’s activities. The main objective of the daily routine of practice, drills, and respectful competition is to provide a sense of structure and recognition of the importance of discipline and hard work in the lives of these young children. PJB focuses on the education of young people through engagement in formal education, cultural, environmental, creative and sporting activities. To this end, while PJB revolves around basketball, it is a requirement that all the children who are members are also attending school. PJB is a project of the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program.

A 2021 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported Promo Jeune Basket’s scholarship program for girls, which covers sixty-five students each year.

A 2013 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network enabled the purchase of video equipment that will allow young PJB participants to better document their experiences and to produce high-quality films with the help of PJB’s media team.

A 2011 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network covered the fees of fifteen girls playing in the provincial basketball championship, as well as the replacement of old equipment.
