Mines Advisory Group (MAG)

Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is an international organization that saves lives and builds futures for conflict-affected communities through the destruction of weapons, including landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and small arms. MAG has worked in over 35 countries since its establishment in 1989 and in 1997 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its contribution to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. MAG works closely with at-risk communities to make their lives safer by both addressing urgent needs and achieving long-term goals. Under emergency circumstances the organization provides safe access to water, shelter, food, and emergency aid to those at risk.

MAG’s work encourages sustainable economic growth in affected areas by helping open up land for agricultural, trade, and infrastructure development and by training and employing local staff from affected communities. MAG currently employs around 3,000 local staff in programs in 16 countries: Afghanistan, Angola, Burundi, Cambodia, Chad, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gaza, Iraq, Lao PDR, Lebanon, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Vietnam.

Support from the Cultures of Resistance Network contributed to MAG’s UXO clearance program in Lao PDR, one of the world’s most heavily bombed countries. MAG has been committed to UXO clearance in the country since 1994, when it was the first civilian organization to establish such operations. MAG focuses its work on assisting vulnerable communities in which UXO contamination prevents socioeconomic development and helping development agencies to safely and successfully conduct their activities.

A 2022 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported their landmine clearing projects in Angola, which focused on the Moxico area.
