Council of Indigenous and Popular Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) (via Rights Action)

COPINH is a social and political organization that aims to support the indigenous and popular movements of Honduras. Based in the southwest of the country, the group serves as a facilitating body for recognition of the political, social, cultural, and economic rights of Honduran indigenous communities. By generating constant debate and analysis concerning the regional and national climates, COPINH works to heighten the social and political consciousness of Hondurans as well as improve their living conditions.

The group’s mission is to position itself as a social, political and strategic alternative for the indigenous populations of Honduras, as well as for the larger network of groups seeking change in the country, with the broader goal of helping build a dignified and humane society. COPINH aims to develop organizational and institutional means of strengthening the indigenous community in Honduras, and thereby begin a process of democratizing local communities, the country, and the region.

A 2008 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the Second Hemispheric Gathering Against Militarization, hosted by COPINH. The Gathering took place in La Esperanza, Intibucá, Honduras, from October 3-6, 2008, and included some 800 delegates from 27 countries. Rights Action served as the fiscal sponsor for this grant.
