APOPO International

APOPO is a social enterprise, registered in Belgium and active in the African Great Lakes Region. APOPO developed an appropriate detection technology, based on the extremely sensitive olfaction capacity of trained rodents. APOPO’s mission is to help save the lives of vulnerable population groups by training rats to detect land mines and tuberculosis. This approach has been endorsed by eleven African Great Lakes Region countries to address humanitarian challenges.

A 2018 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported APOPO’s work in Angola.

A 2017 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported APOPO’s mechanical operations, which are essential for the mine detection rats teams to operate efficiently.

In addition to support from the Cultures of Resistance Network, director iara lee arranged an outside grant for the APOPO in 2022 to support the group’s de-mining work in Angola.
