Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) saves wildlife and wild places by understanding critical issues, crafting science-based solutions, and taking conservation actions that benefit nature and humanity. With more than a century of experience and a presence in more than 60 nations, WCS has amassed the biological knowledge, cultural understanding, and partnerships to ensure that wild places and wildlife thrive alongside local communities. Working with local actors, that knowledge is applied to address species, habitat, and ecosystem management issues critical to improving the quality of life of poor rural people whose livelihoods depend on the direct utilization of natural resources.

A 2014 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network helped support trans-boundary cooperation on snow leopard conservation and education in Afghanistan and neighboring Tajikistan. This effort will help build a broader regional capacity for snow leopard conservation, support the implementation of coordinated and collaborative conservation projects in both Afghanistan and Tajikistan, and advance stronger regional relationships between these countries.

2011 and 2013 grants from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported WCS efforts to achieve long-term sustainable management of Afghanistan’s natural resources. These include linking wildlife preservation to long-term benefits for rural communities, connecting rural communities to the central government, and building the capacity of both to ensure sustainable conservation of Afghanistan’s unique biodiversity.
