The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organization that works on developing and scaling technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. Our aim is to put ourselves out of business once the oceans are clean. They focus on cleaning up legacy plastic, the plastic already floating in the ocean, and “closing the tap” through river plastic interception.
Their ocean cleanup system involves using a floating U-shaped barrier at the surface of the water that creates an “artificial coastline” to collect marine debris as the it is pushed by the natural forces of wind, waves and current. They also use computational modeling to predict where waste will collect in the ocean. Their goal is to have removed 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040.
