Sierra Club

Founded by John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is the oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization in the United States.

Support from the Cultures of Resistance Network went to the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, which over the past eight years has successfully blocked the construction of more than 150 proposed coal-fired power plants in more than 30 states. Up against one of the most powerful and polluting industries in America, the Club joined forces with local, regional, and national allies to build the largest environmental campaign in the United States in decades. Their goals are to slash coal use in the United States, replace that coal energy with cleaner energy choices like wind and solar, and lay the groundwork for ending our country’s reliance on coal altogether. Using teams of community organizers, lawyers, and communication staff, the Club and its allies plan to secure the retirement of at least one-third of the existing fleet of coal plants in the next five years, achieve the nation’s largest reduction in carbon pollution to date, and unleash a huge wave of clean energy investment.
