Panzi Hospital (via Friends of the Congo)

In the war-torn region of Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, rape has become an established tool of war. Every year, thousands of women and girls who suffer sexual violence in the Congo seek treatment at Kivu's Panzi Hospital. Dr. Denis Mukwege, chief surgeon and founder of Panzi Hospital, has become a global authority in the treatment of serious gynecological injuries and a tireless advocate for Congolese women affected by war and medical neglect. Despite continual funding shortfalls and attacks on Dr. Mukwege's life, Panzi has treated over 40,000 victims of sexual and gender-based violence since 1999, including over 2,500 women in just two months of 2014.

A 2014 Cultures of Resistance Network grant to Panzi Hospital provided support for general operations and capacity building. Donor Direct Action served as fiscal sponsor for this grant.

A 2009 grant supported Panzi's legal aid and community sexual violence prevention programs. Friends of the Congo served as fiscal sponsor for this grant.
