Center for the Working Poor

The Center for the Working Poor combines services for the poor, running an intentional community, community organizing, and training and support for mass protest movements. It acts as a consultant and trainer for a variety of groups in the labor, immigrant rights, climate justice, and anti-mass incarceration movements. In 2013, it co-founded the Momentum Training Program in order to provide accessible training around the theory and practice of new social movements. In a short amount of time, the trainings exploded as thousands of organizers and activists reported on their positive impact. Based on material from the training, Mark and Paul Engler wrote This is an Uprising, a closer look at the theory and practice of these new social movement models.

A 2017 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the Center's Resistance Guide, a short online handbook that explains how everyday Americans can join and build the movement to resist Trump.

A 2016 grant from the Cultures of Resistance Network supported the development of an expanded three-day training program, as well as articles for movement leaders.
